Texas direct access lets a licensed physical therapist evaluate and treat you for a limited period without a physician referral; Medicare and some insurance plans still require a plan of care signed by a physician for coverage. We confirm what applies to you before your first visit.

Referrals, cost, timelines, and what actually happens at a first visit.
Not to get started. Texas direct access lets you be treated for up to 30 consecutive calendar days without one, once our Doctor of Physical Therapy has completed your evaluation and plan of care. If we expect your recovery to need more than 30 days, we request your doctor’s order right after your evaluation, so your care is not delayed when the 30 days end. Some insurance plans also require a physician referral regardless, and we check that before your first visit.
Read the full direct access guideMost plans of care run 6 to 12 visits over 4 to 8 weeks. Acute problems often resolve faster; post-surgical rehab and long-standing pain usually run longer. You get an estimated range after your evaluation, and objective retesting confirms whether you are tracking to it.
We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and HMO plans, Blue Cross Medicare Advantage, Kelsey-Seybold, Cigna, Humana, Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans. UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage is accepted for out-of-network benefits only, and we see patients on any PPO plan with out-of-network benefits. Plan on about 60 minutes for your first visit. That leaves time for your evaluation, a first walk-through of your program, and possibly a couple of home exercises to start. Treatment sessions after that usually run 45 to 60 minutes.
