What Should I Wear to Physical Therapy?

Short answer: loose, stretchy clothes and flat shoes you can move in. Here is what that means by body area, and what to bring.

Wear loose, stretchy clothing you can move freely in and flat, closed-toe shoes. Part of a physical therapy evaluation or session usually involves reaching, bending, walking, or lying on a treatment table, so anything too tight, too stiff, or hard to move in gets in the way.

The right choice depends a little on which part of your body is being treated. Here is what works best, body area by body area.

For back, hip, or general evaluations

  • Athletic shorts, loose pants, or leggings — something your therapist can see your hips and knees move in
  • A top that will not ride up when you bend or lie down; a T-shirt works better than a button-down
  • Flat shoes with a closed toe — sneakers are the easy default

For knee or lower-leg visits

Shorts are easiest, since your therapist will usually need to see and feel your knee move through its full range. If you would rather wear pants, loose sweatpants that can be rolled up above the knee work fine.

For shoulder or neck visits

A tank top, sports bra, or loose T-shirt lets your therapist see and move your shoulder without you having to take your shirt off. Avoid button-down shirts or anything with a tight collar.

For a dizziness or balance evaluation

Some tests involve lying back and turning your head on a treatment table, so wear something you are comfortable lying down in and flat shoes you can walk and stand in safely. If you wear glasses, bring them — several balance tests work better with your glasses on.

Three things to skip

  • Jeans or anything stiff at the knee, hip, or waist — they limit how far your therapist can move a joint to test it
  • Heels, sandals, or slip-on shoes — you may be asked to walk, step, or balance during the visit
  • Jewelry or accessories near the area being treated, if hands-on work is likely

Your first visit at Direct PT of Huntsville takes about 60 minutes and includes a one-on-one evaluation of about 30 minutes. We see no more than 2 patients per clinician at a time, so there is no rush to get dressed and settled.
