Treatment approach
How we plan sports physical therapy
Your plan is built around your sport, your goals and how your body responds. Each session is hands-on, with no more than 2 patients per clinician at a time.
- 01
Evaluation with Dr. Chen
A one-on-one evaluation of about 30 minutes with Dr. Sean Chen, PT, DPT, who looks at the problem area and how you move, then sets your plan and goals.
- 02
Settle the problem area
Hands-on care and exercise to ease pain while keeping you as active as is safe. Cupping or dry needling may be added when they fit; dry needling is done only by Dr. Chen.
- 03
Build strength and control
Exercise that moves from basic strength toward the speed, balance and movements your sport asks for.
- 04
Teach and prevent
Education on how your body moves, so you can spot early warning signs and keep training with fewer setbacks.

At Direct PT it includes care after an injury, prehab to get stronger before surgery, and preventative therapy that teaches you how your body moves when early signs such as clicking, stiffness or lost range of motion appear.
MedlinePlus lists sprains and strains, knee injuries, swollen muscles, Achilles tendon injuries, pain along the shin bone, rotator cuff injuries, fractures and dislocations as the most common. A suspected fracture or dislocation needs a doctor first. If you are not sure whether your injury fits, call the clinic and ask.
Sports injury rehabYes. Direct PT offers prehab, physical therapy before a planned surgery, as well as rehab afterward.
Post-surgical rehabMedlinePlus advises stopping play when you get hurt, because continuing can cause more harm, and making sure you recover fully before you start again, starting slowly when you do. Your physical therapy team can tell you what activity is safe while you recover.
Plan on about an hour the first time, since that visit includes a one-on-one evaluation of roughly 30 minutes. After that, most sessions run 45 to 60 minutes.
