Headache Physical Therapy in Huntsville, TX
Not every headache is a physical therapy problem, but a meaningful number are. Cervicogenic headaches originate in the joints and muscles of the upper neck and refer pain into the head; tension-type headaches often involve the same tissues. Both respond to treatment directed at the neck. The first step is working out which kind you have, because that determines whether we can help.

Treatment
How we treat headaches
Treatment targets the neck structures referring pain into the head, then removes the daily loading that keeps provoking them.
- 01
Classify the headache
Cervicogenic and tension-type headaches respond to neck treatment. Migraine and other types may not — and some headache patterns need medical assessment rather than therapy. This is established first.
- 02
Treat the upper neck
Manual therapy to the upper cervical segments, which is well supported for cervicogenic headache.
- 03
Build neck endurance
Deep neck flexor and shoulder blade endurance work, which reduces headache frequency over time.
- 04
Remove the daily triggers
Desk setup, driving posture, sleeping position, screen habits, and stress-related jaw and neck tension.

Questions
Headaches — common questions
For headaches originating in the neck, yes — manual therapy and neck strengthening are well supported for cervicogenic headache, and tension-type headaches often improve alongside. For migraine, physical therapy may help with neck-related triggers but is not a substitute for medical management.
Typical clues are pain starting at the base of the skull, staying on one side, worsening with sustained neck positions, and reproducible tenderness in the upper neck. An examination can usually confirm it by reproducing and then easing your familiar headache.
A sudden severe headache unlike any you have had, a headache with fever, confusion, visual loss, weakness, or one that follows a significant head injury needs medical assessment promptly, not physical therapy. We screen for these and refer on when the pattern warrants it.
