At Direct PT of Huntsville, a treatment session usually runs 45 to 60 minutes. Your first visit takes about 60 minutes, because it includes your evaluation, a first walk-through of your program and a couple of home exercises.
Session length is one of the first questions people ask when they call, usually because they are fitting care around work, school or family in Huntsville and Walker County. Here is how that time is actually spent, so you can plan your day.
How long is the first physical therapy appointment?
Plan on about 60 minutes. The evaluation itself is one-on-one with our physical therapist and takes about 30 minutes: we talk through your history and what your days ask of your body, then test how you move. The rest of the visit is used to walk you through your program and start a short home routine.
If your doctor referred you, new referrals are evaluated on Tuesdays, and we send the evaluation to your referring doctor afterwards so everyone is working from the same plan.
How long are the visits after that?
Follow-up treatment sessions commonly run 45 to 60 minutes. The exact length depends on your plan of care: what we are working on that day, how many exercises are in your program, and whether hands-on treatment is part of the session.
What fills a typical session?
- A quick check-in on how you have felt since your last visit and how the home exercises went
- Exercise and movement work, progressed as your plan allows
- Hands-on treatment when it is part of your plan
- An update to your home program, so the work continues between visits
How to plan your day around a session
- Arrive a few minutes early for your first visit and bring your ID, insurance card and any imaging reports or surgical notes
- Wear clothes you can move in that let us reach the area being treated
- Leave a little buffer after your appointment rather than booking something right on top of it

How many sessions will I need?
