What Happens at Your First Physical Therapy Visit

A first visit is mostly testing and conversation. Here is the whole hour, start to finish, so nothing about it is a surprise.

Most people arrive for a first physical therapy visit expecting to be handed a sheet of exercises. What actually happens is closer to an investigation: we spend the time working out what is driving your symptoms, because a plan built on findings beats a plan built on assumptions.

Before you come in

  • Plan on about 60 minutes for the evaluation
  • Wear clothes you can move in, and that let us see the area we are treating
  • Bring your ID and insurance card, plus any imaging reports or surgical notes you have
  • Write down your three most limiting activities — the things you want back

The conversation comes first

We start with history: when the symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, what you have already tried, and what your days ask of your body. We also screen for symptoms that belong with a physician rather than a therapist. This part is not small talk — it usually narrows the possibilities more than any single test does.

Then the testing

Next comes movement testing: how you bend, load, balance and control the area in question, along with strength and mobility measures we can repeat later to prove progress. Expect to be asked to reproduce the movement that bothers you. Finding it is useful, not a setback.

Treatment starts the same day

We do not wait for a second appointment to begin. Once testing points somewhere, we start treatment in the same session and give you a small home program — usually a short list, not a stack of pages, because a program you actually do beats a thorough one you abandon.

Referrals and insurance

In Texas you can generally start without a physician referral. If we expect your recovery to need more than 30 days, we request your doctor’s order right after your evaluation, so your care is not delayed when the 30 days end. Some insurance plans require a referral regardless, and we check your benefits before your first visit so the answer is not a surprise afterwards.

Related questions

Plan on about 60 minutes. Most of it is history and testing, with treatment starting the same day.

Clothing you can move in, and that allows access to the area being treated — shorts for a knee or hip, a loose top for a shoulder or neck.

This article is general education, not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for evaluation by a qualified provider. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
